Chelsea: Lampard gives Loftus-Cheek injury update
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has hinted he will change his side for Thursday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City. The Blues beat Aston Villa on Sunday, winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud. But City will represent a different challenge, with Pep Guardiola’s side still high-flying in second in the table.
Speaking after Chelsea had beaten Villa, Lampard replied to a question about using a ‘second team’ against City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.
And he said: “Yes, tentatively. I did before this game try and look at it.
“It is difficult because what happens in this game always affects the next one.
“But you have to plan and look forward so I have got an idea and I will look at how players recover first and foremost.
“It is a big ask because some players who have played 90 minutes today when I didn’t expect them to. Some have been out for a while and how do their bodies recover so I will look at that as well.
“It will be a different type of game City. It will be a team who want to play possession so a big part of our game will be our pressing.

“Today, we couldn’t do it. It was more about recoveries and second balls against City we will want to be more aggressive in the work we do to win it back. We will look at the attributes of the players and we will see.”
Chelsea struggled in the first half against Villa but, now, are in pole position to finish in the Premier League top four.
And Lampard feels it was vital for his players to return to action with a win, particularly with so much to play for at this point in time.
“I think it is important for the group because I think we have seen all the games are looking different,” said the Blues boss.
“It is an obvious statement with the crowds, but in terms of the actual detail of the games and the tempo, the matches, the tiredness factor that has been coming into them too.

“So we didn’t know exactly what we were coming into today but now we have three points when some teams have lost points around us.
“It is important we don’t lose sight of some of the errors in the game. We lost a poor goal. We played well in patches but when they put us under pressure I felt we gave it away too easily.
“These are things we will have to clean up on in games in the future. I want to end on a positive note but it is my job to also look at the things we can improve on but it is a good feeling for us today. We will get back to work tomorrow as we know the games are coming quickly.”
Lampard also hailed Pulisic for his stunning cameo, with the Chelsea star helping to turn the game in their favour.
“Yes, I hope so,” he said when asked if the USA international could make a big impact between now and the end of the season. “He was hungry.

“I know that and I felt for him as I felt for all the players with long term injuries, Ruben was in the same position, but I know Christian was very hungry.
“He has trained well. The ability that he has got to arrive in the box is a big thing that I have spoken to him about all season.
“It is the difference between being a very good player off-the-side as an attacking player or the players at the real top level of the game that arrive and score in the six yard box and hit big numbers yearly.
“I really think Christian can do that so I was pleased with the impact he made when he came on.
“He will start games for us, of course. I think he is going to be a big player for us, not just in this run-in, but going forward.”
