'Injustice: Gods Among Us' free on PS4, Xbox, PC until June 25

Fighting video game Injustice: Gods Among Us is now made available to download, free of charge, for a limited time on Sony’s PlayStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox One, and PC until June 25.

The DC Comics-inspired game was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, whose official WB Games Twitter page also confirmed the news:

On Steam, Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition is listed as free for PC users. While it’s true that the game will be offered for free on a limited time basis only, those who grab the title from Steam now will be able to keep it in their library for all eternity.

Revisiting an old favorite

Considering that Injustice: Gods Among Us was originally released in 2013, it might be considered an old title by many, at least in today’s gaming standards.

Couple that with the fact that a sequel, Injustice 2, has since been launched more than three years ago, it’s quite understandable that some might pass up this opportunity.

But the original game and its Ultimate Edition still has some appeal, and acquiring a proven hit for free during lockdown certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Injustice: Gods Among Us built upon the format of Mortal Kombat, a blockbuster also developed by NetherRealm Studios.

Familiar friends and foes

Its fighting game mechanics also proved to be a perfect opportunity to showcase some of DC Comics’ most popular characters, including the usual superheroes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, and many others.

Of course, also joining in on the fun are classic DC villains such as Joker, Harley Quinn, Lex Luthor, Bane, Catwoman, Doomsday, and Zod, just to name a few.

It’s not just about who fares best against the Caped Crusader, really. Injustice: Gods Among Us is also very much story-driven, with a plot that involves Gotham’s Clown Prince tricking the Man of Steel into killing his wife Lois Lane (pregnant with their unborn child), which in turn causes a nuclear blast that completely erases Metropolis and its inhabitants.

Superman then completely goes marbles and becomes a dictator. Well, Batman won’t let him get away with it, so everyone fights it out, to the delight of DC comics fans everywhere.

The game may be more than seven years old, but its graphics still hold up pretty well even by today’s standards. While it’s true that 2017’s Injustice 2 may have done a good job of expanding and improving upon what made its predecessor a success, fans of the franchise can always revisit the original and experience where it all began.
