A video has emerged of a US activist criticising a school board member for online shopping during a discussion about a Confederate school name.

Louisiana School board member Connie Bernard was photographed online shopping during a meeting about changing the name of Lee High School, named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

Days before the meeting Ms Bernard said she wanted to keep the school’s name to honour its legacy.

The video posted to Twitter today shows activist, Gary Chambers Jr. standing at a podium ripping into Ms Bernand over the photograph and her defence of the school’s name.

“You sit your arrogant self in here and sit on there shopping while the pain and the hurt of the people of this community is on display because you don’t give a damn and you should resign.” Said Mr Chambers.

You are the example of racism in this community, you are horrible.”

Mr Chambers said Robert E. Lee was a brutal slave master who was violent towards slaves.

The video has over 900 thousand views.

Ms Bernard has since apologised and told The Advocate she was not online shopping and the page she was caught viewing was a pop-up ad.

Following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter movement in the US, there have been calls for schools with confederate names to be changed.

A school board member set up a committee last week to rename Lee High School. The high school’s name was changed from Robert E. Lee High School to Lee High School in 2016.
