🗓 LaLiga matchday 33 preview: Real Madrid hosts Getafe, Barça faces in-form Atletico

The latest midweek round of LaLiga fixtures sees leaders Real Madrid aiming to take further advantage if second-placed Barcelona drops more points against in-form Atletico de Madrid.

Barça’s 2-2 draw at RC Celta on Saturday allowed Real Madrid to move two points clear in the LaLiga Santander table with a 1-0 victory at Espanyol on Sunday evening. With the games coming thick and fast during the accelerated end to the LaLiga season, any more slip-ups for Quique Setien’s team could be terminal for their chances of catching a Madrid team who are the only LaLiga side to have won all five of their games since Spanish football returned from the COVID-19 enforced break.

Away form has been a problem for Barça all season: however, their record at the Camp Nou so far this term is 15 wins and one draw from 16 games, so Lionel Messi and company will still be confident they can pick up an absolutely crucial three points. Atletico drew their first game back after the restart but have since won four on the trot, and Diego Simeone’s side will be keen to finally seal their first LaLiga victory over Barça since the Argentine took over as coach back in January 2012.

Real Madrid has 11 wins and one draw in their last 12 LaLiga meetings with Getafe, averaging four goals scored in their home fixtures, although their most recent meeting last January at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez was more even than the 0-3 final scoreline suggests.

Tuesday’s schedule of games begins with 18th placed RCD Mallorca at home to 17th placed Celta. Mallorca realistically needs to win to have any chance of catching the Galicians, given the eight-point gap between the teams at kick-off.

19th placed CD Leganes will also be hoping that Mallorca can bring Celta back towards the drop zone when they host fourth-placed Sevilla FC, who have drawn each of their last four LaLiga games.

Wednesday’s programme starts with D. Alaves at home to Granada CF. The Basques are not yet mathematically safe from relegation after three straight defeats, while the Andalusians hopes of European qualification have faded after picking up two points from their last four games

Valencia’s hopes of playing UEFA competition next season have also been hit by two consecutive away defeats, however, Los Che return to fortress Mestalla – where they are unbeaten in LaLiga all season – to host an Athletic Club team now just one place and one point behind them in the table.

Real Valladolid hosting Levante UD should bring a clash of styles as Sergio Fernandez’s well-organised unit take on Paco Lopez’s more expansive side from Valencia.

Real Betis against Villarreal CF also brings a contrast. Betis are limping towards the end of what has been a disappointing 2019-20 campaign, while 13 points from their five games since the restart has Villarreal aiming for the final Champions League qualification spot.

Thursday starts with Basque neighbours SD Eibar and CA Osasuna meeting at Ipurua. Both teams will be aiming for a third consecutive LaLiga victory as relegation worries have been eased by strong form since the restart.

Real Sociedad and RCD Espanyol – who just this weekend parted company with coach Abelardo – have not had such a happy time over the last few weeks, but a win in their meeting on Thursday at the RCDE Stadium would be a help in their respective races for Europa League qualification and battle against relegation.
