TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Tulsa police homicide detectives continue to investigate the now deadly officer-involved shooting that’s left Sgt. Craig Johnson dead.

Homicide detectives have been busy digging into what led to the shooting.

It’s a somber mood in east Tulsa tonight as the department deals with the news of Sgt. Craig Johnson’s death.

The first Tulsa police officer to die in the line of duty since 1996.

“Tulsa’s different and it’s just sad, we’re better than this,” said former homicide detective Dave Walker.

Retired Tulsa homicide detective Dave Walker worked with the department for 35 years.

He knows the loss the department is feeling.

And he dreaded the day another officer would die in the line of duty again.

“Depending on what the circumstances are the why, the who is probably not in question,” said Walker.

As the department feels the pain from this loss the investigation into his death continues.

David Ware is charged in the shooting and Matthew Hall is charged as the getaway driver.

Walker says something about what happened just seems suspicious.

“It’s not uncommon for someone to call a person and say I’m going to run, make sure you’re at the corner of here and there and I’ll flag you down, but if that was the case then he would have ran,” said Walker.

I asked Walker, with his background, if he believes this was a pre-planned attack against police or simply a traffic stop gone wrong.

“There’s just so many conspiratorial things that are wrong with this, why are you driving around at that hour, is he hyped up on dope, why is that car so close,” said Walker.

Today police told me following the shooting, Hall drove Ware to this home in Broken Arrow, where Hall was staying.

The homeowner says he found the two men crying and told them to leave.

“Through the houses, we could see white police cars coming across that field back there,” said neighbor Karen Lipperd.

Karen Lipperd lives across the street.

She says she’s seen Hall outside the home and the red Jeep police say both men got into after the shooting.

This afternoon the District Attorney upgraded the charged on Ware to First Degree Murder.

Hall has also received an additional charge of accessory to murder.
