At Old Trafford there is an ancient tradition. It stems from the days of Sir Matt Busby who heralded a new dawn at Manchester United. The pioneering Red Devils boss revolutionised English football with his innovative use of youth players as he fashioned a young team capable of competing at the highest of stages.

Sir Alex Ferguson continued this tradition upon his arrival and proved the naysayers wrong who claimed ‘you cannot win anything with kids.’ Indeed the Class of 92 honed by Ferguson is still renowned as one of the best crop of academy talents to have emerged at the same time in the entire history of the sport. Perhaps only Barcelona’s magical quintet can compete.

Upon Ferguson’s departure however the tradition seems to have faded into oblivion at United. The likes of Jose Mourinho who proceeded Ferguson did not value youth. They had no faith in it and rarely gave the club’s academy players their shot in the first team.

It seemed United had lost its appreciation for its core ethos. As a result the club looked structureless and devoid of a clear vision.

Thankfully, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come in to change all of that.

The Norwegian has endeavoured to emulate the famous coaches of old. Having spent over a decade at Old Trafford as a player and having previously coached in the club’s academy, Solskjaer has a profound understanding of the Red Devils’ culture and what the fans on the Stretford End crave.

Already, the Norwegian has guided the emergence of the likes of Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams as well as having brought the best out of Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford.

The club’s academy players have thrived under Solskjaer’s management and it seems there could be more on the horizon.

According to The Sun via the Daily Mail, United are about to call up Ethan Laird to train alongside the first team for the remainder of the season.

The right-back has played a few games in the Europa League for United this season but he is yet to make his debut in the Premier League.

A talented and marauding defender he could be well suited to Solskjaer’s style of play.

What do you make of Ethan Laird’s promotion to the first team?
