In a tragic incident, 19 people are dead along with 6 injured in a blast at a medical clinic in Tehran, Iran, IRIB news agency reported by quoting state officials, as per a Reuters report.
Gas leak official cause
The cause of the explosion is a gas leak, said Tehran Deputy Governor Hamid Reza Goudarzi while speaking to state television.
It also caused a fire which has been doused, said Jalal Maleki who is the Tehran Fire Department spokesman.
The clinic had 25 employees inside when it happened. It mainly performs small surgeries plus medical imaging.
This is a huge tragedy and in the midst of a pandemic and its struggling economy, Iran did not need this. Several lives have been lost due to what might have been a simple act of negligence.
Not an isolated incident
But it’s not the first blast in recent days to be attributed to a gas leak.
Only a week back, an explosion took place near a sensitive military site not far from Tehran.
The Defence Ministry gave the cause as gas leaking from a tank at a storage facility.
There were no casualties reported.
