Jones recently replied “Or I won’t play” to a report about his contract situation with the Chiefs. “LeVeon Bell told me about this,” he added in reference to Bell’s holdout during the 2018 season as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bell was eventually released and signed a four-year deal with the New York Jets.

From @NFLTotalAccess, answering the question of which guy deserves to get a contract extension, I went with #Chiefs DL Chris Jones, though with the team not making an offer at $20m per season or more, I don’t think he bites before the deadline to do a deal. pic.twitter.com/tygcsLCXer

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday on NFL Total Access that Jones has “always viewed himself as a $20 million-plus” player; however, the Chiefs don’t believe he’s worth that much. Furthermore, Garafolo said there is “a lot of work to be done” if a long-term deal does happen, and he not confident it will happen.

Chris Jones is slated to make $16 million in 2020, but Jones clearly wants to sign a long-term deal to protect his future financially in the NFL.

The Chiefs are expected to have just over $3 million available in cap space in their top-51, per Spotrac. With that being said, they will most likely have to rework other top players’ contracts to extend Jones.

If Kansas City and Jones don’t agree to a long-term deal by July 15, the 25-year-old defensive tackle will either have to sit out the season or play under the one-year franchise tag. Based on Jones’s tweet on Tuesday, sitting out seems like a legitimate possibility.

Nevertheless, if Jones doesn’t get the deal he’s desiring, it’ll be a big loss for the Chiefs.
